First of all I'd like to say that I enjoy watching Alton Brown on the Food Network and was drawn to this course because of the idea of looking at food preparation in more of a scientific light. Secondly I'd like to say that it has been many years since I have been involved with some of the Chemistry talked about today so I appreciated the crash course approach. It was non-threatening and I was able to follow and contribute to the conversations. Lastly I would like to say that the different approaches & teaching styles used helped me look at how to present some of this information to students which I will touch on in the Final Report Assignment.
ReplyDeleteI am very interested in learning more about Alton Brown and hope we can all get his book to use in the classroom. Food really get's the students attention and applying it to their daily lives and how their bodies work will hopefully help them make healthy choices. I thought the GI Tract Activity used simple materials but made the students think on what to use and what happens in each organ when choosing the materials. This is one I could easily use in Middle School.
ReplyDeleteI also though the chemistry was really advanced. Bring back memories from college. I think I got the stuff about how acid has H+ ions that break-up fats. H+ ions break apart hydroxide ions, right? I will definitely use the GI tract activity in my classroom. Lots of fun, visual, requires teamwork, requires higher level thinking, could be research-based.
